Jiri Lehecka looks to repeat Tokyo dominance over Valentin Vacherot in Basel final

Match News & Form

Jiri Lehecka’s chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals are very slim. He potentially needs the title in Basel this week and at least another final at the Paris Masters next week to keep them alive. He appears ready to take on that challenge, having given himself a shot at the Basel title. After straight-sets wins over Stan Wawrinka, Daniel Altmaier and Jerome Kym, he faced his toughest test of the week in the semi-finals against an in-form Jan-Lennard Struff. He had to fight back from a set down and save a match point to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-4.

Keeping his slim Turin hopes alive is one thing, but before that, Lehecka looks like a player who deserves a title this year. He is still without one despite two extraordinary runs this season, to his first Masters final in Miami and, a few weeks ago, the final in Tokyo. On both occasions, he was unlucky to run into elite opponents in the title match, putting up a good challenge against two players who were virtually unbeatable, losing to Jannik Sinner in Miami and going down 7-6, 6-4 to Carlos Alcaraz in Tokyo.

Valentin Vacherot has developed a tough trait in recent months: spending long stretches in survival mode, then landing the knockout punch when it matters most. He has done it against higher-ranked opponents too, which has made some of his runs look very impressive. He pulled off three-set wins over Stefanos Tsitsipas and Arthur Fils on his way to the Tokyo semi-finals last month, and he has done exactly the same in Basel this week, nicking three tight battles in a row against Rafael Jodar, Holger Rune and Taylor Fritz to reach the final.

It is a fantastic and timely result. It takes him back into the top 30, a place he lost after failing to defend his Shanghai title last month, and gives him a solid cushion before he defends big quarterfinal points at the Paris Masters next week.

Head-to-Head: Tied at 1-1

Vacherot dominated their first meeting at the Paris Masters last year, when he was in the form of his life, before Lehecka levelled the series in the Tokyo semi-finals a few weeks ago. Notably, both matches were one-sided affairs that ended in straight sets.

Stats & Facts

Jiri Lehecka has won eight of his nine matches on indoor hard courts this year, including team events. His only defeat came in three sets against eventual champion Tallon Griekspoor in Brussels last week.

Lehecka holds a 2-7 record in tour-level finals. Both of his titles came against opponents ranked outside the top 50, Jack Draper in Adelaide in 2024 and Reilly Opelka in Brisbane last season.

Valentin Vacherot is set to play only the second final of his career, having converted the first into the Shanghai Masters title last year.

Vacherot has won six of his 11 matches against higher-ranked opponents this year.

Betting Analysis

Valentin Vacherot has been very difficult to put away this week, repeatedly coming back from tough positions to edge tight battles, and facing a player on that kind of run is never easy. Having said that, he was on a very similar run in Tokyo, where Jiri Lehecka thoroughly dominated him to end it. If Lehecka replicates that level and plays to his potential, he has the ability to control this matchup from start to finish once again. He can be expected to do just that, despite carrying the extra pressure of protecting his slim Turin hopes.
