Anders Antonsen’s run at the Super 1000 China Open tournament was limited to just a single match. In the first round, Denmark’s top men’s singles player lost 21-15, 17-21, 20-22 to Chinese youngster Weng Hongyang.
Antonsen actually held three match points in the third set, but Weng Hongyang kept his cool to win five consecutive points.
Antonsen was seeded third in the tournament, while Weng Hongyang is ranked 18th in the world.
The in-form mixed doubles pair of Mathias Christiansen and Alexandra Boje fared better in the first round. Early Tuesday morning, the Danish duo—seeded third—won in straight sets against a pair from Malaysia.
Two Danish men’s doubles pairs and singles players, Line Kjaersfeldt and Rasmus Gemke, are also competing in the China Open but have not yet played their first-round matches.
