Borussia Dortmund showed the character of potential champions, notching a fifth consecutive victory in the Bundesliga in a 2-1 triumph away to VfL Wolfsburg at the Volkswagen Arena.

After taking advantage of Bayern Munich dropping points last week, Dortmund knew they had the opportunity to apply further pressure on the Bundesliga leaders with a win here ahead of their game against Hoffenheim tomorrow.

Yet it was the home side who looked the most dangerous in the first half, and Wolfsburg had a glorious opportunity to break the deadlock midway through the first period when Mohamed Amoura was played through on goal, but despite being one-on-one, the Algerian sent the ball high and wide.

The away side were dominating possession, but it took until the half-hour mark to create their first real opportunity when Julian Ryerson was picked out in the box, where he lacked composure, skying his effort despite having time before letting fly.

Ryerson was involved again a minute later, this time pulling the ball back to Maximilian Beier, whose effort deflected onto the crossbar.

Dortmund began to ramp up the pressure with half time approaching and did make it count on 38’ when Julian Brandt brilliantly headed in at the front post from Ryerson’s corner kick.

Before kick-off, 11 of Wolfsburg’s last 12 games had seen both teams score, and that run was bolstered as Die Wölfe levelled the scoreline seven minutes into the second half, with Konstantinos Koulierakis rising highest to nod home Christian Eriksen’s free-kick delivery.

Niko Kovač’s men struggled to regain control of proceedings in the second period, as the home side came the closest to netting their second of the afternoon when Amoura again found himself with just Gregor Kobel to beat, but once more, he missed his chance, firing straight at the goalkeeper.

Wolfsburg had all the momentum with full time approaching and were denied by the woodwork on 80’ after substitute Lovro Majer was picked out in the box, but his header crashed off the crossbar.

Wolfsburg coach Daniel Bauer was left incredibly frustrated after his side dominated the second half and found themselves behind with minutes remaining.

Fábio Silva played in Serhou Guirassy, who curled his finish into the far corner with his only shot on target in the contest, ultimately earning a vital victory for Die Schwarzgelben.

That decisive late goal will be majorly disappointing for Bauer’s Wolfsburg as they look to avoid dropping to Germany’s second tier for the first time since 1997. Meanwhile, Dortmund are now just three points behind Bayern as they hunt down their first league title since 2011/12.
