Kakamega Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula has urged Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to fire coach Benni McCarthy following the team’s 8-0 humiliating friendly defeat against Senegal at the Mardan Sports Complex, in Antalya, Turkey, on Tuesday.

The Lions of Teranga tore Kenya to pieces, ending the first half with a 6-0 lead.

Led by former Liverpool star Sadio Mane, Senegal raced into a 3-0 lead within the first 15 minutes. Bayern Munich star Nicolas Jackson, who is on loan from Chelsea, opened the floodgates with only eight minutes played.

Senegal doubled their lead through El Hadji Malick Diouf, before Mane scored a hat-trick in quick succession.

At the start of the second half, Ibrahim Mbaye made it 7-0 before substitute Cherif Ndiaye put the icing on the cake.

'A local coach can do better'

According to Shimanyula, who admitted to being pained following the mauling, it was time for FKF to look beyond the South African legend and trust a local tactician to take Harambee Stars forward.

“It was a very painful defeat, we have never lost like this in a long time. We don’t deserve to lose like this, it was shameful,” Shimanyula told Flashscore.

“The coach was missing in training (before the team left for Turkey), he was not around, and he only met the team in Turkey. Is the coach really committed to his work?

“A coach who loves his job needs to stay with the players for a long time as possible. I was surprised the assistant coach took charge of training sessions before the team left. That was very unprofessional from McCarthy, he ought to have been around to prepare the team.

“For now I propose that FKF go out and get a new coach. In my opinion, a local coach can do better. We need to trust a local coach and give him required support, and a free hand to do his work.”

'This is what is killing the team'

Shimanyula took issue with the former Manchester United assistant coach on his selection criteria, saying a lot of good players were being left out of the squad.

“He (McCarthy) always picks a team from selected teams, he always doesn’t go out to get more players from other Premier League clubs; his scouting is not going to help Kenya.

"He has failed, and he cannot help Kenya to develop,” explained the Homeboyz boss.

Shimanyula added: “For example, Homeboyz are second in the Premier League but we don’t have a single player in Harambee Stars from the team. AFC Leopards are currently doing very well, but there is no single player in McCarthy’s squad from the team.”

He went further to question the absence of striker Moses Shumah in the squad. Shumah was the FKF Premier League top scorer from the previous season with 17 goals but he left Homeboyz to sign for Zambian Super League side Power Dynamos.

At Dynamos, he has been the key player helping the side to reach the group stages of the CAF Champions League. Shumah has so far scored six goals in seven appearances for Dynamos in all competitions this season.

“Shumah went to Zambia, he has been scoring goals for Dynamos, but he doesn’t get a call-up to the national team. For McCarthy to succeed, he needs to create competition within the team; he has a pool of good players countrywide, and he should use them to create competition,” offered Shimanyula.

“In the current squad, most players are guaranteed a starting role. This creates laxity amongst the players because they know that even if they commit mistakes, they will still start the next match. But with proper competition in each position, it will help the players to wake up.

“Everyone Kenyan nowadays knows which players will be called up whenever McCarthy intends to name his squad, and this is what is killing the team.”

The worst Kenya defeat in history came in 1961 when they lost 13-2 against Ghana during a friendly to celebrate Jamhuri Day. At the time, the Black Stars had a very strong team with a dangerous striker in the form of Ben Acheampong.
