Danish players and leaders have not been happy about the lack of spectator interest in the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam when Holland have not been playing.

It's tradition that arenas are sold out when the host nation plays in final tournaments, and it has also been the case when the Netherlands have been in action in the Ahoy Arena in front of 9.000 spectators.

But as has been the case for many years, handball faces a challenge on days when the host nation is not playing.

Per Bertelsen, who is responsible for the tournament, the COC Chairman, in the International Handball Federation, IHF, acknowledges this.

"Basically, it is something we talk about with the organization. It is something we talk about already one or two years in advance – the challenges that may arise. It is a problem on days when the home team is not playing. That is a fact, Bertelsen" tells TV 2 Sport.

Also the Danish captain Trine Ostergaard says the lack of spectators has diminished the exitement at the tournament.

"I think it's incredibly unfortunate, when so many good nations participate in this championship that people stay away except when the Netherlands play. It's a shame for the entire tournament that they haven't been able to spread the word to make people come see other nations other than their own, she says.

In terms of spectators there has never been more than 20% of the capacity to any of Denmarks matches. The lowest was 185 spectators to Denmark's game in the intermediate round against Senegal (2% of the capacity).

Denmark will be in action on Sunday night against Hungary in the game in the intermediate round.
