Carolina Hurricanes 6-5 Pittsburgh Penguins (OT)

The game with the most goals came in Raleigh, where the Carolina Hurricanes took the lead four times in the contest against the Pittsburgh Penguins, but needed overtime to come out on top 6-5.

Jordan Martinook's opener midway through the first to give the hosts the opening period. That was the only goal until the same point of the second, when Penguuins captain Sidney Crosby tied things up. After Jackson Blake restored the Canes' lead, the goals came thick and fast in the third.

Erik Karlsson added parity with a power play goal, only for Taylor Hall brought Carolina ahead once more. The teams again traded goals with Bryan Rust scoring for the guests, while Logan Stankhoven netted for the hosts. Karlsson's second of the game with 5:14 left, with Benjamin Kindel adding the Pens' fifth of the night 23 seconds later to give them their first lead.

But, the Hurricanes would not give in. K'Andre Miller tied things up with less than three minutes left, ultimately sending overtime. The five-minute extra period also went the distance, only for Sean Walker to score a winner with 29 seconds left for the home team to prevail.

The Canes take sole possession of top spot in the Eastern Conference after their 12th overtime victory of the seaason. Pittsburgh remain in fifth spot, failing to jump ahead of the Montreal Canadiens.

New York Rangers 3-6 New Jersey Devils

A three-goal haul from the New Jersey Devils were enough for them to top the New York Rangers 6-3 on the road.

Jack Hughes and Jaroslav Chmelar led the scoring in the game, as the Devils pair scored a goal and an assist each in the victory. Jesper Bratt and Nico Hischier also contributed a goal and a helper themselves in a solid performance from the away team.

The Rangers, who had initially taken the lead through Vadislav Gavrikov, succumbed to defeat after Connor Brown put New Jersey ahead for the first time towards the end of the second. Down 4-2 in the third after Timo Meier's marker, New York made it a one-score game through Conor Sheary.

That was the closest they got though, as Hughes and Bratt netted late goals to seal the win for the Devils. They are still 10 points out of the playoff spots despite the success, their third in a row. The Rangers sit bottom of the East with their 32nd regular season loss of the year.
