Paris Saint-Germain dismantled bitter rivals Marseille in Le Classique to reclaim top spot in Ligue 1. Ousmane Dembele starred with a brace in the emphatic 5-0 thrashing that maintains the hosts’ unbeaten home league record this season (W9, D1).

Looking to respond to Lens’ 3-1 win over Rennes, a highly motivated PSG side made a purposeful start to open the scoring inside 15 minutes against their arch-rivals. Desire Doue’s pass with the outside of the boot sent Nuno Mendes racing in behind the Marseille backline, and he squared for Dembele to slide home.

After being pushed onto the back foot, the visitors threatened an instant response through Amine Gouiri, but the striker was thwarted at point-blank range by the alert Matvey Safonov

That chance proved to be Marseille’s brightest moment of a half that was headlined by the impressive Dembele, who demonstrated why he is a Ballon d’Or winner with a sublime individual effort in the closing stages of the first period.

Collecting the ball on the right, the Frenchman skipped past one defender and dropped a shoulder to beat another, before rifling a fierce shot into the roof of the net to register his sixth goal in his last five Ligue 1 appearances.

Boasting a two-goal cushion at the break, PSG showed no signs of letting up after the restart, with Doue and Barcola both striking a post in the hosts’ relentless search for the game’s next goal.

It ultimately proved to be a matter of time until PSG’s onslaught yielded a third in a moment that Facundo Medina will want to forget. The Marseille defender inadvertently headed past his own goalkeeper in a desperate attempt to intercept Vitinha’s pass across goal.

With the win effectively secured, two of PSG’s substitutes, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Lee Kang-in, joined the party to pile the misery on Roberto De Zerbi’s charges. Kvaratskhelia showed great technique to drive home a looping ball on the full before Lee fired in at the near post to wrap up a commanding win.

It puts Luis Enrique’s side two points clear at the summit and leaves fourth-placed Marseille three points adrift of Lyon in third.
