Danish cycling star Mattias Skjelmose (Lidl-Trek) is going to withdraw from the Road Cycling World Championships in Canada later in the year. He announced this to TV 2 Sport ahead of the final stage of the Vuelta a España.

The Danish Lidl-Trek rider has been struggling with illness during the Spanish Grand Tour and tells the media he is looking forward to returning home.

"It’s probably not ideal with the World Championships in mind, but I informed Michael Morkov (national team coach) about an hour ago that I have to withdraw because my body has nothing left to give," he tells TV 2 Sport. "So, I need to get home and take a break; I don't think I can offer the national team what I ought to be able to."

Consequently, another rider will have to represent Denmark at the World Championships in Skjelmose's place. He did not disclose who that would be.
