Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named a 23-player squad for the international friendly against Zambia in Gqeberha on November 15 and has largely stuck with his tried and trusted selection.

There is no room for Orlando Pirates winger Relebohile Mofokeng, who is the major absentee, though he has only just returned to action for The Buccaneers after injury.

Mofokeng is viewed as one of the rising stars of South African football but has had a difficult start to the 2025/26 campaign.

Molde defender Samukelo Kabini, Tondela midfielder Yaya Sithole, Al-Ettifaq winger Mohau Nkota, and Burnley striker Lyle Foster are the only overseas-based players called up.

Broos is building towards next month’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Morocco and also has an eye on the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Bafana have just one game in this international window, and Broos has suggested he might give fringe players a run, using it as a final opportunity to train together before AFCON.

“It is the last game where we can give chances to a few new players,” he said.

One of those could be Sekhukhune United midfielder Keletso Makgalwa, who has been called into the squad after some fine performances in the Betway Premiership.

Shandre Campbell, who has played a few minutes for Club Brugge in the UEFA Champions League, has again been overlooked, but Broos says with AFCON in mind he does not want to make too many changes.

“We are preparing for AFCON; it’s not the moment to be calling those players. Shandre is in the selection of 45–50 players but changing things before a big tournament like AFCON is not a good idea,” he said.

Broos added that the plan was always to play a single match, as the South African domestic season is in full swing and he believes players need rest rather than more games.

“Why only one game? It’s because of the overloaded programme in the PSL right now,” Broos said.

“Teams are playing every two days, and I wanted to save the players a bit from playing two more games for the national team. I would rather have one good game than two and risk fatigue for the players.”

Bafana will face Egypt, Angola, and Zimbabwe in the group stages at AFCON, and await December’s draw for the World Cup qualifiers after booking their ticket last month with a 3-0 win over Rwanda in their final qualifier.

South Africa have not lost any of their last 24 internationals with Broos in the dugout, though their 2-0 victory over Lesotho in March was later overturned to a 3-0 loss on a technicality after they fielded ineligible player Teboho Mokoena.
