To mark the start of the new campaign, we take a look at selected PSL records, as well as the all-time best marks in South African football that could be broken this season.
Most title wins in a row and overall
Mamelodi Sundowns hold the current best mark of 18 league title wins, with the next highest being Kaizer Chiefs with 13. Sundowns also hold the record for the most consecutive league titles with eight from 2018 to 2025, a run finally ended by Pirates last season.
Most PSL points in a 30-game season
Sundowns beat their own record for the most points in a single 30-game PSL season when they accumulated 73 in the 2023/24 campaign, a figure they matched the following season, though from only 28 matches.
The most points accumulated in any season in South Africa is 75, a record Sundowns jointly hold with Kaizer Chiefs from the 1998/99 campaign, which had 34 matches per team.
Most wins in a PSL season
The best mark is 24, held by Sundowns, which remarkably came from only 28 games in the 2024/25 campaign. They drew one and lost three of their other four fixtures.
This is the most wins in any campaign, including those in which the league was contested over 34 matches.
Most successive PSL wins
This was a mark that Sundowns set in 2022/23 when they went on a run of 15 wins in a row under then coach Rhulani Mokwena.
That beat the previous best mark of 11, also set by Sundowns under Gordon Igesund in 2006/07. Their 15-game run was ended by a 1-1 draw at Stellenbosch FC.
The overall South African record is 17 successive league wins, which the all-conquering Kaizer Chiefs team of 1991 set on their way to winning the championship.
Most PSL home wins in a 30-game season
Sundowns hold this record after winning all 14 of their home matches in the 2024/25 season, which was played over 28 matches.
It was the perfect home campaign, in which they scored 40 goals and conceded only three times.
Most away wins in a 30-game season
This record is jointly held by Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs.
Amakhosi managed 11 away wins in their victorious 2014/15 season, the last one under Stuart Baxter in his first spell in charge, and also the last time they won the league.
Sundowns matched that in the 2023/24 campaign when they also won 11 games on the road.
Worst away record
It is doubtful that the worst away record in top-flight football will ever be broken.
It was set by Mother City in the 1999/2000 season, when each club played 34 games and they lost all 17 away matches, scoring seven goals and conceding 57.
In a 30-game season, Mpumalanga Black Aces, when they went down in 2011, won just one of their 15 away games and lost the other 14.
Bizarrely, that single victory was against the side that went on to win the championship – Orlando Pirates.
Most PSL team goals
The overall PSL record is held by Chiefs with the 73 goals they scored in 34 games in the 1998/99 season.
The best mark in a 30-game campaign is the 65 Sundowns netted in 2024/25.
Most PSL player goals in a season
Former Zambia international striker Collins Mbesuma holds this record after he netted 25 times for Chiefs in the 2004/05 season.
He was almost eclipsed in 2021/22 by Sundowns’ Peter Shalulile, who managed 23 goals.
Fewest PSL team goals conceded
Sundowns and Chiefs share this record after they conceded only 11 times each.
For Chiefs, it was in the 2003/04 season on their way to winning the league under Ted Dumitru. Sundowns matched that feat in 2023/24 when they also conceded only 11 goals.
Pirates won the league last season after conceding only 12 times.
Most PSL team clean sheets in a 30-game season
Bitter Soweto rivals Chiefs and Pirates share this record.
Chiefs kept 21 clean sheets in their 30 games in the 2003/04 season, while Pirates did likewise in winning the league last season.
Most PSL goalkeeper clean sheets in a 30-game season
Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine claimed this record last season when he kept 21 clean sheets, beating the previous mark of 18 held by Sundowns’ Ronwen Williams in the 2022/23 campaign.
Best PSL goal difference
Sundowns set a new mark for the best goal difference in 2024/25 with +52, topping their previous record by 11.
That dropped all the way to +36 last season, which is why they finished only as runners-up.
Biggest PSL title-winning margin
Sundowns currently hold this record, having romped to a 23-point league title triumph in the 2023/24 season.
That smashed the previous record, which they also held, of a 16-point margin.
Most decorated PSL player
Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has now claimed an astonishing 12 league titles in South Africa, a record that will take some beating.
The first three of those came in the colours of SuperSport United before he won nine with Sundowns.
He might have had one more, but was sent on loan to Bidvest Wits when Sundowns won the league championship in the 2013/14 campaign.
Fastest PSL goal
The fastest goals in the history of South African football were scored after 10 seconds, something that has happened three times, including as recently as 2023.
Abednigo ‘Shaka’ Ngcobo took just 10 seconds to give Chiefs the lead in their meeting with Moroka Swallows at Vosloorus, but there was no way to double-check the claim as there was no television coverage at the time. The word of those who were there had to suffice.
Aleni Lebyane netted after 10 seconds, live on television where the timing could be measured, as Free State Stars made the perfect start against Santos in the PSL on 3 February 2001, only for the game to end in a 3-3 stalemate.
That was almost matched in the 2023/24 campaign when Peter Shalulile scored for Mamelodi Sundowns against Kaizer Chiefs after 10 seconds in an extraordinary start to their MTN8 semi-final second leg.
Youngest PSL player
At 15 years, five months and 22 days, Mkhanyiseli Siwahla is the youngest player to appear in a top-flight PSL match. It was for Ajax Cape Town against Dynamos in a cup game on 25 February 2004. Not only did Siwahla start, but he also scored after 41 minutes and is therefore also the youngest scorer in the South African game.
He beat the previous mark of 15 years, eight months and 15 days held by Steve Motsiri, later Lekoelea, who also made his debut in the starting line-up for Moroka Swallows against Bloemfontein Celtic in 1994.
Oldest PSL player
Andre Arendse became the oldest player in professional football history in South Africa when he played for Bidvest Wits in 2013, breaking a record that had stood for more than 30 years. Arendse’s mark is 45 years, 10 months and four days, beating by three months the record held by the equally legendary goalkeeper Trevor Gething.
Arendse was the goalkeeper coach at the club when he was registered amid an injury crisis and then pressed into service. He helped his club to a 2-1 away win against the University of Pretoria. Gething’s record was 45 years, seven months and 22 days.
