Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia failed to win a SportPesa Premier League for the second time in a row after battling to a 1-1 draw against Nairobi United in an entertaining encounter at Wang’uru Stadium in Embu on Sunday.

The record Kenyan champions went into the game having lost their previous league assignment 2-1 against KCB. For United, they had drawn their last game 1-1 against Bandari after losing 3-2 to Murang’a Seal.

K’Ogalo had a moment to celebrate through midfield maestro Alpha Chris Onyango, who unleashed a spectacular strike to find the back of the net and register his fifth goal of the season.

Onyango’s stunning effort once again underlined his growing influence in Gor Mahia’s midfield, with the Kenya national team player continuing to deliver important contributions as Gor Mahia continue to push for another league title.

United went into the half-time break enjoying a 1-0 lead after James Seremba found the back of the net in the 32nd minute. With United looking to take the maximum points, Onyango scored in the 89th minute to earn Gor Mahia a vital draw.

The Green Army headed into the encounter determined to respond positively in the quest to add points and keep the mission of 23rd title alive.

Gor Mahia were unbeaten in the top-flight before KCB ended their run of four matches. They had defeated Murang’a Seal 4-2, APS Bomet, and Bandari FC 1-0, and Kakamega Homeboyz 1-0.

Bandari pick first win, AFC draw

In another match, Bandari FC registered their first victory in the league after five attempts following their hard-earned 1-0 win against Tusker in Mombasa.

Derrick Nsibambi was the hero for the Dockers after he scored in the 54th minute to condemn the Brewers under coach Julien Mette to their second defeat of the campaign.

The win enabled Bandari to move above Tusker and settle in ninth position with seven points accumulated from one win, four draws, and one defeat.

Bandari’s victory also saw coach Charles Okere win against his former club. Okere handled Tusker last season before he was fired, and later appointed to take charge at the Mombasa-based club.

AFC Leopards squandered a great opportunity to move second after battling to a 0-0 draw against promoted side 3K. Leopards have now recorded four draws since the season kicked off.

They drew 0-0 against Bandari, 0-0 against Shabana, 0-0 against Mara Sugar, and now 0-0 against 3K. Leopards remained third on the 18-team table with 10 points from six matches.

KCB kept their top spot following a hard-fought 1-0 win against APS Bomet. In a game they struggled to break down Bomet, the Bankers finally scored the winner in the 90th minute via Jim Owili.

KCB are now leading the table with 13 points garnered from four wins, one draw, and one defeat. Former champions Kenya Police FC settled for a 0-0 draw against Homeboyz.
