Manchester United have decided they need a succession plan for Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro, which has sparked the club into looking at replacements for two of their most experienced stars.

Both players have been central to United’s revival this season, forming a reliable partnership in the heart of midfield that has helped steady the team under Ruben Amorim.

Their influence remains vital - but with Fernandes now 31 and Casemiro 33, discussions are underway internally about how to refresh that area of the pitch in the long term.

Amorim places huge trust in the pair, yet there is a growing awareness inside the club that United lack a clear strategy for what comes next.

Beyond Harry Maguire, they have no other senior outfield players over the age of 30 - and the balance of the squad is becoming a focus as recruitment plans take shape for 2025.

Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte have not fully convinced the boss of their all-round ability in the roles and, even though they are still both likely to stay at the club for the full season, there is a thought process aimed at looking towards what United look like as they evolve.

Right now, United’s lighter schedule - with just one game per week after missing out on European qualification and suffering an early Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town - has eased the physical demands on Fernandes and Casemiro.

Behind the scenes, though, there is an acknowledgment that the club will need greater depth and stronger competition in those roles next season.

United’s intention to sign two midfielders across the next two transfer windows is firmly in place.

The ideal scenario is to bring in one player with Premier League experience - or proven quality in English football - to ensure a smoother transition into the side and immediate readiness for the top flight’s intensity.

As revealed earlier this week, United do not view Carlos Baleba as a £100 million asset and will not move for the Brighton midfielder unless his valuation drops significantly. Meanwhile, Elliot Anderson of Newcastle continues to be assessed, though there are doubts internally about how well he fits Amorim’s tactical setup.

Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace remains high on United’s list of priorities, while Yehor Yarmoliuk of Brentford is also admired by the recruitment department. Other overseas targets are being monitored but the club plan to refine that shortlist over the next month as they determine which players are realistically attainable.

For now, United will continue to rely on Casemiro - who is expected to hold talks over a potential contract extension - and Fernandes, whose leadership and creative influence remain central to Amorim’s vision for this crucial season.
