Wandile Duba’s hat-trick against TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout is just the ninth by a Kaizer Chiefs player since the 2007/08 season, showing what a rare feat it has become for Amakhosi.

Duba scored all three goals in an 18-minute spell for his first senior hat-trick, ending a four-year wait for Chiefs since Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana achieved the feat against Stellenbosch FC in October 2022.

It was also the first for Chiefs in this knockout competition since Marks Maponyane in 1987, when he scored three goals against Rangers in the BP Top 8 final.

Bimenyimana’s hat-trick against Stellies was unusual in that it involved three penalties, the first time a player had achieved the feat in the PSL era.

Chiefs have recorded 26 hat-tricks in the PSL era, with 17 of those coming in the first 11 seasons of the Premier Soccer League, which began in 1996/97, and only nine more in the almost 20 years since then.

In fact, six of the hat-tricks, or almost a quarter, came in the very first PSL season!

Former Amakhosi striker Pollen Ndlanya netted four trebles for the club and leads the way in that regard, with 20 players in total managing the feat, Duba the latest on Tuesday night.

Kaizer Motaung Jnr, Collins Mbesuma and John Moshoeu all managed two hat-tricks for Chiefs in the PSL era.

Four players managed to score four goals in a game, the most for Chiefs in this period – Ndlanya, Mark Williams, Lehlohonolo Majoro and Bernard Parker.

Bloemfontein Celtic have been on the receiving end of the most Chiefs hat-tricks, with three scored against them down the years.

The longest drought for Chiefs in the hat-trick stakes was four seasons, from 2007/08 to 2010/11, before Lehlohonolo Majoro scored four against Black Leopards in the Nedbank Cup.
