The 2026 Handball European Championships start on Thursday, 15 January, and the tournament will showcase some of the biggest names in the sport. Meet them here.

Luc Steins (Netherlands)

Playing his trade in France since 2016, the Dutch captain has turned into a huge profile in the French Starligue and a key figure for PSG over the years. He’s also a regular for his national team in major tournaments, and needs no introduction.

The 30-year-old playmaker will once again be leading his team this winter, aiming to take them as far as possible. Two years ago, the Netherlands were knocked out in the quarter-final despite the fact that Stein led his team with an impressive drive and relentless energy.

He’ll be back again this time. And despite a few dips in form this year with PSG, he remains a crucial attacking force.

Juri Knorr (Germany)

Another playmaker to keep an eye on during the tournament: Juri Knorr. At 25, the German is at the peak of his career. With 34 caps since 2020, he’s become a key player for his team.

Having been named best playmaker at the EURO 2024 and the 2024 Olympics, expectations are high for him. And since this summer, he’s been shining at Aalborg, recording 42 goals in the Champions League.

Olympic silver medalist and fourth at the last EURO, he’ll be fully focused on helping Germany go even further.

Mathias Gidsel (Denmark)

It would be impossible not to include the world's best handballer over the past two years. The Füchse Berlin right back will once again be a major presence at a top tournament and is sure to be a stern challenge for any defense.

With 555 goals in 92 appearances, the Danish triple world champion is ready to take Europe by storm.

Despite all his titles, he’s still chasing a European Championship. You can bet he’ll stop at nothing to claim it. In top form again this year and with an unbreakable mindset, his opponents will have their work cut out for them.

Alex Dujshebaev (Spain

He’s another top name to watch. The right back, now in his final season at Kielce, continues to make headlines. With a 71% scoring rate per Champions League match, he’s still a major threat in attack. He’s also a key contributor in defense and will be a headache for his rivals once again.

Jim Gottfridsson (Sweden)

At 33 years of age, Gottfriedsson is one of the veterans of the Swedish national team. Gottfridsson has been a key figure for Sweden since 2012, with no less than 156 caps to his name. That’s a huge number, showing just how much he brings to the squad.

Playing for one of the tournament favorites, he’s expected to lead his team far in the tournament.

He’s been less effective this season, so there’s less pressure on him compared to other Swedish stars. Still, his leadership can only help the team move forward. And if he hits top form, it’ll be a delight for his fans.

Elohim Prandi (France)

He was the face of the French success at the last EURO. Thanks to his stunning free throws, France reached the final in 2024 and went on to beat Denmark (33-31). Still as sharp as ever, especially when it comes to finishing and with his powerful shots, the Bison hasn’t lost his touch.

Consistent for both club and country, he knows how to fight for results, and 2026 will be no exception. With the ambition to go after major titles again after finishing third at the World Championship, he’ll be a driving force for the Bleus.
