Brighton are remaining firm on Carlos Baleba, but believe Manchester United will ultimately be forced to meet their mega valuation if the Old Trafford hierarchy truly see him as the solution to their midfield problems.

That is the view of sources close to the situation, with Albion continuing to maintain that the 22-year-old is not for sale, despite growing interest.

In recent days it has become clear that the Baleba situation was set to intensify, with Brighton bracing themselves for fresh enquiries during the upcoming transfer window.

While there has always been an expectation that Albion’s stance would be tested - with United and other Premier League clubs hoping to land him for a reduced fee - Brighton remain unmoved.

Baleba’s slight dip in form this season has led some suitors to question whether his valuation could drop closer to the £70m mark they believe represents fair market value.

However, Brighton have sought to shut down that narrative by repeatedly insisting publicly that he will not be made available under any circumstances.

Club chairman Paul Barber said on Saturday: “No call from Old Trafford, no call from anyone connected to Manchester United. We have no plans or desire to sell Carlos in this window or any future window.”

Interestingly, sources believe that this firm public position is also designed to gauge just how strong Manchester United’s conviction really is.

Brighton are well aware, from previous discussions last summer, of how highly United rate Baleba and how closely his profile matches what Ruben Amorim is looking for in his midfield rebuild.

At the same time, United are understood to be struggling to identify alternative targets who offer the same blend of top-flight experience, physicality and positional control.

As a result, Albion believe that if United’s belief in Baleba as the right fit remains strong, they will eventually have little choice but to meet Brighton’s full asking price.

Seagulls insiders are adamant that their £100m-plus valuation will not change in the next transfer windows, regardless of external pressure.

Baleba is currently on international duty with Cameroon at the Africa Cup of Nations and is set to feature in their clash with South Africa today.
