Suzan Lamens saved the Dutch honour at the US Open by beating American qualifier Valerie Glozman 6-4, 6-2 on Tuesday.

Earlier in the tournament, the Netherlands saw all its players get eliminated in the first round. Tallon Griekspoor and Botic van de Zandschulp got whitewashed by Adrian Mannarino and Holger Rune, and Jesper de Jong lost a thriller against Brian Nakashima.

This left Suzan Lamens, the 66th-ranked player in the world, as the only remaining Dutch player at Flushing Meadows. Wild card Valerie Glozman was the first opponent of Lamens's US Open career.

Lamens shot out of the gates and immediately reached break point in the first game, but Glozman fended it off. The 18-year-old American had no answer to Lamens' next two break points, which eventually saw the Dutchwoman take a 5-1 lead.

With the set win at her fingertips in the seventh game, Glozman showed her promise by dealing with three set points and retaining her service game, before breaking Lamens with her first break point of the set.

Lamens would eventually end the set with a love game and grab a 1-0 lead.

Second-set chaos

A chaotic second set started with Lamens racing to a 3-0 lead after having reached break point four times in the opening three games. Glozman responded with a break of her own, and the two exchanged breaks for the next four games.

With the score at 4-1, Glozman fiercely defended her spot in the US Open by fighting Lamens till the very end. A marathon game saw the two get to deuce nine times and Lamens get to break point five times, but redeem none of them as Glozman broke Lamens once again.

Lamens' final break seemed to be the breaking point for Glozman, who fought for what she was worth, but could not keep Lamens from clinching the second set with a 6-2 score.

How long Lamens will remain in New York to defend the hopes of Dutch fans is yet to be seen, with second seed Iga Swiatek set to play Lamens in the second round.
