The round of 16 final became the final stop for Clara Tauson at Wimbledon. After an otherwise great tournament, the Dane lost 4-6, 1-6 to the eighth-seeded Iga Swiatek.
The 23rd-seeded Tauson otherwise got off to a good start and was ahead 3-1 in the first set, but later seemed unwell and in the long run could not challenge the former world No. 1 and five-time grand slam winner.
Thus, Denmark has still never had a women's singles player in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.
Six times, Caroline Wozniacki reached the round of 16, but lost every time.
At the beginning, otherwise you had the feeling that Tauson could pull off a surprise.
Swiatek seemed very nervous, and she could not get her serve to work at all. In both her first and second service games, Swiatek made two double faults, and Tauson broke Swiatek's serve on both occasions.
But then Swiatek recovered control of his serve, and when Tauson made a number of unforced errors, Swiatek managed to restore parity.
When the set entered its decisive phase, it was clear that the Dane was not feeling well.
She gasped for air after a long duel, and pounded her chest in frustration.
She clearly struggled to catch her breath and lost the set 4-6, when she made a double fault on Swiatek's second set point.
Tauson then asked for a medical timeout
She managed to make it 1-1 in the second set, but she was too inhibited to seriously challenge Swiatek, who gradually settled into her stylish stride.
Swiatek never allowed Tauson to get a glimpse of a potential comeback and the Dane did not have the strength to chase a comeback. From then on Swiatek raced through the service games and secured her victory after 66 minutes of play.
